One of the points in the new rules which does seem to have changed is the requirement to have your boat re-measured when anything other than small and minor repairs are carried out.

Having rebuilt and repaired several boats the only requirement was that the works when completed, would not invalidate the certificate.

The new wording implies that the replacement of woodwork ie, gunwhales, thwarts, supports and any deck repairs for instance would require a boat to be re-measured.

What are other folks veiws on this.

The reformatted rules are simply that (a re-format to conform to a standard). They should not "change the game" or change what is and isnt allowed.

Sorry John,

As I understand it, when accepted, these rules in the new written format will be the only rules we will have.

Is this not the case?

Yes that is correct. So we need to identify any areas where the meaning of the rule has unintentionally changed, while they are in their draft form (as you have done above) so that the issues can be resolved prior to them being adopted.

Sorry if this is telling you what you already know, but it is worth stating for other readers.

Take a look on the Firefly web site, there is a similar discussion there but more involved as people convert their boats from one deck plan to another. The Alb dosn't have this problem at the moment?

I read this post with interest having replaced the gunwales and deck overhangs of my Alb last year. If the intent of the new rules is that they remain unchanged just reformatted then the text should be virtually identical. There appears to be a change in the rule in the description of the deck overhang.

2004 rule 3.2.16 A deck overhang shall be incorporated and shall project not less than 12mm or more than 77mm outboard of the sheerline, except that it may be faired into the hull within 100mm of the bow and transom.

2009 rule D.6.2 states the deck hull shall run unbroken on each gunwale except that it may be faired into the hull within 100mm of the bow and transom.

My replacement gunwale and over hang flairs out abruptly mid ships, I notice that perhaps 20% of the fleet at Largs this year had a similar flair amidships.

As I read the new rules I think there is a change, intended or not

1) I would need to get the boat remeasured.

2) My new gunwales are not legal as they do not run 'unbroken'

Did I gain an advantage by these modifications? No not judging by results at the nationals.

If the rules are currently in draft is there a process where queries such as mine and Crawford’s can be posted and answered, or is this forum the notice board?

I am not trying to be critical & I fully sympathies with those who have had the difficult job of trying to rewrite the rule. I am involved professionally in a standards writing comittee and know how just difficult it is to get down on paper good intent and also to reach common consensus. However it needs to be clear, we have to live with the text for the next five years or so.
