I am in the process of refurbishing an albacore that I purchased in 2006. Upon stripping down the old varnish /paint I have found two numbers on the hog 1842 and 1902. Can anyone supply any information as to boat history and or which is the correct number as I intend to purchase a new suite of sails for 2010.

Hi Ian, I think there have been previous post on this issue before. As I undersand it the earlier Fairey Marine hulls had two numbers' one number is the build number, as Albacores came off the same moulds as the Swordfish all the boats were given a consecutive number regardless of Alb or Swordfish, the second number is the Albacore registration number. So if this theory is correct I suspect you have Alb 1842.

If you have any previous info on your boat ie owners or name of boat a phone call to the RYA technical may well assist you in confirming the identity. The RYA were quite helpful when I was trying to id my boat. For Ł15 they will registar you as the new owner and send you a replacement certificate.

There are also a number of regulars on this forum who have quite a lot of class history. Hopefully they will chip in here to assist.

Good luck with your restoration

ps don't forget to add you boat to the Albacore registry on the USA Alb website

Ian,

Richard is mostly correct with his explanation of apparent inconsistencies with numbers, but I'm not aware of any boats that had two different numbers stamped on the hog. Also, I think that the problem had been resolved by 1967 which is when the oldest of your numbers originates from (builders other than Fairey Marine were very active by then, and this was an issue specific to Faireys). Certainly Dad had #1840 way back when, and I think it had the correct number stamped on it.

If your boat is 1842 it will have been built by JW Davis and son in the Spring of 1967. The Davis boats all had a builders plate so if that still exists it might add evidence.

If memory serves me correctly, there's another reasonably recent thread on the forum somewhere from a guy who used to build boats at the Davis yard. He may also be interested.

If on the other hand you have #1902, I'm afraid it's an unknown boat that has never apparently been registered with the RYA at all.

I can't trace either boat as ever having raced at a Championship.

Hi
I also am the owner of an Alb with 2 numbers on the hog..
the sail number of my boat is 1903 but the other number is higher.. something like 1948?? (I'll have to go and look but it's too cold tonight to go out to the garage)...
It worried me too but I was told the same thing as has been posted here, that the higher number is a hull number rather than a registration number..
1903 is a Young's boat from 1968.. I bought her from the Isle of Wight about 6 years ago with the intention of starting sailing again but due to health and work issues really only got going this year.. Wish I'd done some research earlier as it looks like my 1903, when new, was sailed by J and N Herbert under the name King Nookie.. I would presume that 'N Herbert' is Neville Herbert that won the Northerns at my home club (Winsford Flash) in 2009 in a boat called Spirit of Nookie.. It would have been nice to have chatted to Neville about his lovely old boat which will be racing again in 2010.. (I sailed the Northerns in Alb7522)..

Nigel,

Neville would have still been a twinkle in his father's eye in 1968. However J Herbert would indeed have been John - Neville's father. I think all his boats have had Nookie in the name. John is a past National and International Champion, but not in AL1903.

AL1903 was named "Villiers II" by 1972 when John won the Nationals in AL1932 "Nuki’s Temptation"

Thanks to all of you that have supplied information. I have now determined that the correct number is 1842 it is a wj davis boat built in Feb 67 and was named " Brains-Blower". I have not been able to idnentify any previous owners
