If you are like me with soft, delicate hands due to an excess of washing-up, writing symphonies, begging letters etc etc, you will need to wear gloves when handling those nasty hard ropes. There is no need to buy expensive proper sailing gloves - instead buy cheap gloves from hardware stores - the ones with slightly sticky crinkly orange plastic fronts & soft fabric backs. They have more grip but dont last as long as sailing gloves but are a fraction of the price.

You will be in exalted company - if you look at the picture of Ben Ainslie on the front of his autobiography he is wearing just such gloves

Jerry,

The knitted bricklayers gloves that are 7 pairs for a tenner at the hire shop are even better value as they last longer that any sailing glove I know:

I've been wearing them since the 70s. What does that young Ainslie upstart know!!

Yes - that's very good advice - we wear them for most, if not all of our outdoor activities where hand protection is needed.

In fact they are so good that perhaps they should be free-isssue on the NHS, and would certainly save many injured, cracked and sore hands if more widely worn.

Now John, please can you also explain just how do you get your superb pictures on to the forum posts, as I for one cannot see how its done, and you seem to be the only one who does.

First you need to put the picture on a web server somewhere - I have my own web space, but you can also upload your pictures to a site like photobucket.com/ , you can then link the picture using the tree icon of the Post Reply form. (use the "Post Reply" button rather than the quick reply form)

I too have been using those sticky finger gloves for several years. Ł1 a pair at my local market stall. Top tip, the blue ones don't seem to go gooey like the green in the heat. Watch out though; you get used to the grip and if you use anything else, like now in the cold, the sheet slips like crazy.
By the way Musto sell identical item for about Ł5 a pair - that works out at Ł4 for the logo! Ho Hum

That looks like Strathclyde Loch Derek and judging by the condition of Blue Migic, it wasn't yesterday either.

Cheers

When I first took over NAA Merchandise in about 1983! I bought 100 pairs of these yellow jelly gloves, for Ł1 each. They sold extremely well, but unfortunately, I could only get them in the large size. I recon they could double up as table-tennis bats!
