Good Afternoon all

Following on from other threads I have re varnishing and restoration - I am trying to piece together a list of the minimums I need to buy before I start and therefore get the beginnings of a boat budget together...

Anyone have an idea of the surface area of the hull, of side and foredecks , of seats and sole etc - so I can judge how many tins of remover and varnish I will need..

Thanks

Or of course, anyone know how to calculate the surface areas reasonably accurately?

If I was you I wouldn't waste time with stripper buy a good hot air gun with adjustable heat settings (De Walt) and a tungsten carbide scraper, as for paint 750ml should give you 2 coats on the hull, varnish for inside and decks if back to bare wood, then probably 5 litres would do it depending on the finish required. don't use epoxy unless you can seal all surfaces ie inside tanks, under decks etc or moisture will get in and be unable to escape, hope this helps

I agree with Graham a DeWalt hot air gun (I think i paid £15) and a good carbide scrapper. A plasters trowel is also very good for flat surfaces and you don't burn your hands.

I think Barney Harries told me that the surface area of the hull is approx 100 sq ft so 10 sq M. This was the calculation he used for working out materials for laying up a hull.
